This is my final version of my double-page spread.

 

 

The first image above represents my first draft of my front cover and the 2nd image my final. I decided to change the main image first as I felt that the image wasn't conveying the genre that I wanted to represent along with the masthead, which I also changed. I felt that the 1st draft image looked more R'n'B next to the masthead, and chose to go with the more cheesy approach the 2nd time, displaying a more 'poppy' atmosphere to the front cover. I decided that I didn't want to use a font from dafont.com and just decided to generally use a default font from Photoshop itself but design it in a way that suited the magazine making it bold which created a statement and eye-catching to the audience. I also chose to put a slogan underneath my masthead on the final draft, the colours coordinating with the masthead above in order to create a more professional vibe to my magazine, also stating which genre the magazine belongs to.. Also, the teaser fonts had changed because I felt that the font in general just made my front cover look completely different to how I imagined it to look.

 

The colour scheme of blue, pink and white is present throughout the front cover, DPS and contents page to represent the target audience being girls from 11-16. I thought that the three main colours stood out against the black background and created a warm feel to the magazine, making it more feminine. The pink, blue and white also represents the Union Jack's red, white and blue but, the pink is a feminine and pop'ish substitute instead of red.

I managed to lighten the image in the final draft in order to make the image look more fresh without it looking too false and fake. The first image in the 1st front cover was too dark, my fault in the lighting but, I felt that it didn't match the genre and needed to create something that looked relatively close to what I wanted.

I changed the positioning of most things too for a more professional feel. I thought that the teases/cover lines would be more appropriate on the left 3rd, which would be more realistic in existing magazines instead of at the bottom of the page [seen in 1st draft] I chose to put the website address underneath the slogan to create more space at the top left hand corner, where my website would be, slightly cramped too. My price and date is with the barcode at the bottom right corner for more realism and generally for a neater appearance.

Chosen Images

 I chose these shots because I felt that they worked better than the other shots that I had taken. I found that these shots also had the more appropriate lighting as the other shots seemed to come out darker than I had hoped. I also decided on these images because I thought the camera angles worked well, and there are a variety from long shots, mid-shots and medium close ups allowing me to have a variety of images for my magazine.

These are the results of my photography shoot on the 22nd of November 2013.



The photos were taken against the black back drop despite the need for a white B.D but, my models could only use participate on the 22nd. The clothing that they wore were matching white vest-tops, this would of been of been changed if the back drop was white as I wouldn't want the models to blend and wash in with the back ground behind them. I thought that the white would contrast with the black prior to the lighting around them, if the lighting was hit correctly the models would really stand boldly infront of the back drop. I also decided that the models would wear the matching clothes, also the matching maroon jeans to reinforce the bold statement against the colour. Also, the clothes that the models are wearing would be a statement to the audience as the models represent a form of fashion that may or may not be popular with the youth culture.

The poses that my models portrayed could be similar to that of the Pop magazines published today. I wanted to display a very poppy kind of vibe complete with the cheesiness of the average teenage magazine.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 



This is an effective magazine cover that could potentially influence my magazine. The soft lighting that is focused on the model creates a nice touch to the photo because it gives more of a light feeling to the shoot. The pose that the model is portraying would be too risky for the genre that my magazine will be, but the clothing and theme that she is displaying is quite useful. Although my magazine would not be featuring a school-type theme, it can display a theme none the less. The “prep” school feel is in touch with the genre and this inspires me to create a magazine with a certain theme to it be it plain and simple or actually create a type that is noticeable to the audience, aka the cheerleader American theme this Smash Hits cover portrays. The masthead is very engaging to the audience as it makes a clear statement with the matching colours that Britney, the model, is wearing. The bigger the masthead, the bigger the statement.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This magazine is effective because of the layout of the front cover itself. The colours are bold and stylish: which is how I want my magazine to look but the colour scheme will be different. The direct mode of address makes the magazine more personal and engaging for the audience as they feel that the model on the magazine cover is personally engaging with the reader; an attribute that I want my magazine to personally possess. The summery colour scheme represents the theme that Vogue may have wanted to achieve and gives the magazine a positive vibe and an elegant image. This influences my magazine to a definite-look to give the audience the genre of the magazine straight away.

Special Instructions

1)     Plain Jeans/Any colour as long as both models wear similar colour

2)     White T-shirt or Vest-top no logos or special designs

3)     Plain white trainers/vans, no multicolour or sparkly items

4)     Hair can be any design – if wearing hairband etc. match colour with shoes or jeans.
